A large piece of rubber with a hook attached to it acts like a giant suction cup. When Dr. Tatiana throws it on a heavy chair, there is little air left between the chair and the rubber, whereas the air pressure outside is about 15 pounds per square inch (or about a hundred thousand newtons per square meter). This is almost 1,500 pounds of force pressing down on a 10-inch by 10-inch piece of rubber, which is more than enough to hold the chair to the rubber when someone lifts it by the hook.
