Happy dividend distribution day for all Realty Income (O) shareholders who celebrate! I own this REIT (real estate investment trust) in my personal dividend stock portfolio. With a 5.55% starting dividend distribution yield and a 5-year dividend CAGR of 2.9%, I look at this as a more conservative investment in my portfolio, a bond-like proxy. I started buying O in 2013 in the $42 range. I’m not adding at the current level, but I absolutely love the monthly dividend, as someone who uses dividends to help pay his bills. Having monthly income really helps with budgeting. Moreover, I work in the real estate industry, and have experienced that it is very hands-on. I like REITs for exposure to real estate without the hassle of property management. (Disclosure: I’m long Realty Income, ticker $O. One argument I hear against dividend stocks is that I am giving up control of when I get paid and how much but I see it as a way to plan when and how much I get paid. Another is that high dividends are a trap… which I think we all found out the hard way… but most things are learnt the hard way. Or that a dividend lowers the stock price or are immaterial to the total return… which is fine! I just want some of that total return now, in a planned way, not when I decide to or have to sell.
Growing the dividend is a must for me!
O makes sense for retirees focused on yield, not stock growth; otherwise, it's not worth it, unc.
What do you think of NEOS funds?
Fellow O investor here, love the monthly dividends. I have it paired with the BLV bond fund to get paid every 2 weeks like a supplemental paycheck. Do you like ACN at all? Its dividend growth has been very good over time. And how about CAG? Great yield right now but no growth, hoping (not a strategy) that I got in at the bottom under $18.
I like O simply for the monthly stability. My plan down the line is to pay my bills with dividends, and monthly is when my bills come 😂
