Multilevel marketing companies claim to be legitimate businesses, but some seem awfully…pyramid shaped. John Oliver and Jaime Camil demonstrate how they work.

  1. 13:35 simple version
"to move up, you need people you hired to buy our shit. people hired by people you hired will give you money but not movement up the ladder"

i suspect this is so people whove hired alot of people already dont just stop and sit on their hired people hiring other people. otherwise that would kill the recruitment drive long term.

given that "people who buy our shit" are the victims in this scenario, its basically telling you to not only hire fellow scammers, but also hire more victims. obviously in this system victims are highly encouraged to become scammers to recuperate losses, so you always have to hire more victims to keep your position.

its kinda beautiful from a purely systems perspective how well they make sure their con keeps running.

  2. My friend's mom who was also my mom's friend back in the 90's used to sell Mary Kay cosmetics. My mom would buy some of the products to help her out from time to time, but she would never actually use them. She said she didn't like the well it felt on her skin, but she thought if she didn't buy some she might lose a friend she held dear, and their family was struggling with money. It took a couple of years before she finally stopped selling Mary Kay and it took her husband threatening divorce to get her to stop, as they had boxes of unsold product just lying around their house. I never got told how much money they went into debt for, but both of my friends parents were working 2 jobs each for quite some time to recover from this. As they weren't home a lot, I remember my friend coming over to my house for dinner at least 2-3 times a week or my mom bringing the left overs or extra food she made over to their house from time to time as well.
