At the height of the French Revolutionary War, a new alliance between France and Spain threatened to overturn British naval supremacy, upon which Britain’s empire, economy and security depended.

The key to British survival would be to prevent the French and Spanish navies joining forces – so when British Admiral Jervis encountered the main Spanish battle fleet off Cape St.Vincent, he decided to attack, even though outnumbered almost two-to-one.

The battle would be decided by the daring actions of one British commander – Commodore Horatio Nelson – who would soon emerge as one of history’s most brilliant naval tacticians.

  1. in honor of Cosme de Damian Churruca y Elorza from the ship San Juan Nepomuceno

21 October dawned, and in sight of the British fleet Churruca ordered the colours to be nailed to the mast, and ordered that they should not be taken down while he still lived. Under the command of Churruca, the San Juan Nepomuceno demonstrated military precision, daring and efficiency, despite finding itself alone against six English ships, including HMS Defiance, HMS Tonnant, HMS Bellerophon and HMS Dreadnought. After being reached by a cannonball which tore his leg, Churruca died with the admiration of his enemies, who displayed his vessel in Gibraltar to visitors with his name written in golden letters above the cabin, and advising those who would enter to remove their covers, as if don Cosme Damián de Churruca y Elorza was still present. His officers kept their word, and only lowered the colours after his death. Unable to break the circle of fire and in order to prevent the vessel sinking with all the wounded trapped below, the San Juan surrendered with over 100 dead and 150 wounded on board.

  2. Would love to see oceans, seas and rivers characterized based on winds, tides and shores–even how freshwater and saltwater might behave differently.

Likewise, show me ships of the line fighting in rough waters with disciplined and exercised crews who know when to fire their cannons on the up or down roll. Even better, when the ship tacks in the wind or runs close hauled.

  3. Now this type of events that should be shown in games, most importantly a game similar to AC Black Flag. Considering this can fit to Assassin's Creed story very well. All in all, this is a very cool and interesting story than most history taught in school.
