At the height of the French Revolutionary War, a new alliance between France and Spain threatened to overturn British naval supremacy, upon which Britain’s empire, economy and security depended.
The key to British survival would be to prevent the French and Spanish navies joining forces – so when British Admiral Jervis encountered the main Spanish battle fleet off Cape St.Vincent, he decided to attack, even though outnumbered almost two-to-one.
The battle would be decided by the daring actions of one British commander – Commodore Horatio Nelson – who would soon emerge as one of history’s most brilliant naval tacticians.

Weight of gun means as much as the number 😮😂
its this great history that doesn't get discussed in our schools anymore and it needs to be, thank you for these great videos.
Thanks!
S glad you pronounced Admiral John 'Jervis' correctly. Now tell that to the recent arrivals of Jervis Bay NSW Australia. 😂
Hail Lord Nelson!!!
Can you believe nearly all of the best Admirals of England ran away when they were teenagers to join the navy.
I'm into the 11 minute point and this narration is complete nonsense. It doesn't include WIND DIRECTION or strength. I'm a lifelong sail boater and once won a regional youth contest in the exact location of Commodore Perry's battle of Lake Erie. I am not a student of this battle and can't dispute its recount of the events, but the maneuvers and tactics and therefore the judgment of the commanders can't be appreciated by simple recounting of positions and turns. The wind is the engine of all these vessels. When ships change course they are not just maneuvering against enemies, they are also gear-shifting their "engines" because the wind generally allows higher speed and faster maneuvers when angling across the direction it's blowing, than when sailing in the same direction as the wind. Just as I did as a kid in racing small boats in a fleet, these naval captains would be balancing both the military value of locations and directions compared to the enemy, along with the different speeds and handling and maneuvering options given and allowed by the wind in those same circumstances.
