It's easy to understand how people can become mentally ill the more time they spend online when books like Everything Grows in Jiddo's Garden are censored but pity marketing is a real thing.

It's hard because it's boring and cringe. I don't want to use trending reels formats or dated memes or flooding a post with a thousand tags hoping it pops up on someone's feed. I just want to write about morons and hope somebody enjoys reading them.
Would it be possible for you to read and review Alchemised by SenLinYu? I bought the e-book version after noticing there was a lot of hype surrounding it, but I almost immediately also bumped into severely critical commentary in goodreads and other places, and I got confused. It felt like people either LOVED this book or HATED this book, and now I feel nervous to touch it for some reason.

Thank you for making this video, you make some fantastic points. Watching this and other book "controversies" I'm beginning to think it all ties back to people viewing writing not as a career or a vocation but like a business now. They see these authors selling huge amounts of books, and lets be honest, some of those books who sell gazillions of copies are just – bad. So it's natural that writing isn't viewed like a craft you have to hone, but more like a business. Which is where these pity-marketing campaigns come in. It's not about writing books and finding readers who love your stories, it's about selling.
This tactic really reminds me of James Somerton – throwback drama! – he was also a person without a community around him who could not stand criticism and built a bunch of fans to rush to his defense with cries of 'homophobe!' whenever anyone pointed out legitimate problems. It's gross, don't do that imo! Haha
