If you think pity marketing works, take a single look at people below the poverty line doing gfms and crowdfunding for lifesaving stuff. Doesn’t matter how badly you need it, the moment you require a tiny bit more empathy than the barest minimum, people turn their backs.
32:08 The name for what you're describing is a "thought-terminating cliché"! A phrase that ends the argument in your head; an excuse not to think. Almost an affirmation against wrong/bad thoughts. You probably know it, since you discuss the concept so eloquently, but I thought I'd share the search term for anyone who'd like to read more 💗

Maybe its cause im used to the fan fic writing circles but i see an autor talk about something that happened in their life and go "mood" and move on.
Ao3 author notes are wild some times.
🏳🌈 Late to the party, but really glad I found the time to watch this one. I'm currently building my marketing plan and while looking into case studies of recent 'success' stories (and maybe climbing down the rabbit hole a bit) I've discovered pity marketing and been rather put off by it. I'm a writer not a social media person (though I know lots who are both, I am not) and I'm definitely not a marketer. Tyring to find an honest way to connect to potential readers without coming off as pity marketing, using my LGBTQ status or neurodivergence as a hook, or sounding like a walking ad machine, has been really hard. I'm still planning, but I'm also so overwhelmed. Video's like this really help, so thank you! I'm also sorry they bring you grief and ignorant people. I hope you have a great week
Just love your insightful takes and it’s really interesting to see how book publishing world works
Yesss I'm so glad you called out the misuse of "banned books"! I saw someone using it in the loose, frankly whiny way you mention and it bothered me for a reason I couldn't quite figure out but you solved the mystery for me! It's like when Internet losers complain about their first amendment rights being violated when they're deplatformed: y'all, that isn't what that means, and you are watering down the meaning and impact of activists who are working on fighting real and VERY frightening causes.
Thank you so much for all the work you do talking about banned books and the options folks have for getting engaged on the local level- speaking as someone who has always lived in traditionally "liberal" cities, I think a lot of folks just don't pay a ton of attention to local politics that have really significant impacts, and don't know what channels are available to them to participate and make their voice heard. Making public comments at schools committee meetings, zoning board meetings, selectmen's meetings, town council, town halls etc is NOT fun and REALLY hard, but it is one of the most politically impactful things people can do. You are such a great example of impassioned and effective local politics influencing!
Also your videos are brilliant and entertaining and your takedowns of garbage romantacy make me giggle 🙂
So I was binge watching YouTubers who talk about stuff like this and writers who do Kick Starters, but fail to deliver and have 5 billion excuses on my TV. My girlfriends brother was over fixing her PC and was listening to the videos we watched.
He said he was going to make a website that alerts readers to "shady" writers/authors online. A kind of online 'blacklist' if you will.
i feel like another big part of it is even consumers see themselves and each other largely as products, where an author is a Person Deserving of Empathy. there's this narrative that to not engage or not buy is the only valid form of criticism that is so intrinsically tied to money; "community" = unequivocal and unconditional collective support for The Human, The Author Who Is My Friend, where Other Readers = Product That Is Not My Friend that mean-spiritedly and unnecessarily engage with Product That Is My Friend, Made By Human. The only "valid" form of critique is withholding your money, and anything beyond that is "stopping people from just having fun" or "being mean" to a Real Person Who Really Matters, as opposed to whoever this guy is that just wants to be a killjoy by slamming my Favourite Thing
I feel its an extention of the "well, I put in a lot of effort" attitude you see everywhere.
No, just because you spent a lot of effort on something, doesn't make it inherently valuable and anyone saying otherwise is cruel.
If I spend multiple days failing to make a cake, you wouldnt tell me is a good cake even though I didn't bake it, just because I tried really hard
