  1. I just remembered an incident from 20 years ago. It's the only time I've bought something out of pity (apart from buying a magazine from a litteral beggar). I was waiting for my friend at the university hall, and an old immigrant man came to me and started selling his self published poetry book by wailing over and over again how he's hungry and doesn't have money to eat in this country. I talked with him, wanting to be respectful to an old person, and said I was waiting for my friend, but he kept on wailing and wouldn't stop or go elsewhere. I didn't have much money either, but ended up buying the book.

Another friend had run into him on a different occasion, and also ended up buying the book. We read it enough to see it wasn't even good. More like written by an average hobbyist who knows a bit poetry but not much. Which is totally valid, we've all been there, but perhaps work on your skills more before trying to sell your books.

I do see that guy as a valid writer, but yeah, the pity marketing (or perhaps begging is more accurate?) only worked for one book. After that I think both me and my friend had a negative view on this guy's poetry. Also the situation of an old dude pestering young women untill they buy his book was just really bad.

  2. 🌈 I recently followed someone that this video is prooobably about, only to discover that the educational content that I liked was not really happening, and then to discover pity marketing that soured my heart. I wish them all the best, but the only reason I haven't un-followed is ADHD. It's not malicious, it's just gross. It just gives me the ick. Sad thing is, there was a time I might have picked them if the occasion arose because why not? It just feels awful.
