I don't think Americans realise in the UK both imperial and metric are used. Often with no reason why is used instead of the other
Here's an example, the small headphones jack used on phones and console controllers. In the UK that's a 3.5mm jack
The larger jack, that you would see used on guitars for example. Well that's a 1/4 inch jack

Actually a lot of Brits prefer the imperial system. We still use both imperial and metric.
Except the US officially does use the metric system since the Metric Conversion Act of 1975
