What if the man responsible for catching criminals… was secretly the biggest criminal of them all? In 18th-century London, the line between justice and crime wasn’t just blurry—it was inverted. Enter Jonathan Wild, the so-called “Thief-Taker General,” who ran London’s criminal underworld while posing as its savior. But when a rebellious escape artist named Jack Sheppard became a symbol of defiance, Wild’s empire—and ego—started to crumble.
We really enjoyed revisiting this series and getting to implement the viewer feedback that Rob had previously only been able to address in Lies. Original Lies video here: https://youtu.be/Z8zj6TQUi5U

Video so great I watched through the entire ad at the end
32:45 so what you’re telling me is that cops have known that all along?!
Fascinating how London’s fear of a standing police force actually gave space for figures like Jonathan Wild to thrive. Do you think today’s policing systems still reflect that early tension between public trust and state control?
41:48 MY EYES!
Could you do a series on the history of how the US police got established?
They police london?
4:25 so THAT’S where America got it from
Ok so I'm late to the party but wow that was eye opening! Thank you for all your great videos.
Aww, Detective Zoey and her little deerstalker.
Excellent brief history of the Metropolitan police. It's just a shame that the Met have given up preventative policing entirely, and stopped investigating crimes like the theft of phones and cars, housebreaking, shoplifting, burglary… However, they have become very good at prosecuting people for writing things on social media or generally expressing anti-left views.
