BORE SCORING: REAL PROBLEM OR OVERHYPED FEAR?
In this video, Brandon from Slakker Racing Development takes you inside one of the most misunderstood topics in the Porsche world — bore scoring on M96 and M97 engines.
We’ll cover:
• What bore scoring actually looks like (and what’s just casting or polish lines)
• The right way to borescope a 996/997 engine — and why “from the bottom” is a myth
• Early vs. late-stage scoring and what symptoms you’ll notice
• Why the camera always makes things look worse than they are
• Side-by-side comparisons: borescope footage vs. real cylinder surfaces after teardown
Whether you’re inspecting a car to buy, trying to understand a shop’s report, or just curious about the engineering behind these flat-sixes, this video breaks it all down — with real examples, no scare tactics.

ok…. so is a puff of smoke on start up after sitting for 2 – 4 weeks concerning? or is this standard? no blow by after start up at all? Does scoring result in more consistent smoking.
How much oil consumption would you think is acceptable before worrying about the onset of bore scoring?
I had it on a freshly rebuilt motor from nienlives motors in southern California. After 1700 miles . Bad machine work. They did not warranty it . Celeb and Peter professional crooks . Stay clear
Is it only me or LN engineering shoots bs telling people to bore scope from the bottom? Thank you for the video!
Very informative, thanks for the information.
Hi slakker guys – why was that engine out of the car? Was it giving any issues at that level?
Good stuff guys! Really keep those videos coming! 🙌
Any one from LN or Flat 6 call to argue? I agree with the path shown here.
Love these videos, keep them coming. Brandon is a breath of fresh air on the borescoring debate. Would love to know the hidtory of the engine, miles? cold/warm climate? tracked?
Also, you mentioned debris causing marks and scoring and not the piston skit. If thats the case, piston skirts should look great. Show us all six of them!
Those Temu bore scopes are really clear.
My 9$ one is great
