I've always liked this. As usual I didn't see video. 😊
They had two minor hits with What About Love ? and Coming Up Close. The latter showed her strengths as a great lyricist. She went solo after three TT albums. She was nominated for an Oscar for her song Save Me. I recommend the Magnolia soundtrack and her albums Whatever, Bachelor No. 2 and Mental Illness. Very underrated artist
She did backing vocals on a Cyndi Lauper song (Faraway Nearby) in 1986
Battle of the Narcisist and the empath. Her being the latter. And when the empath has had enough it sends the Narcasist into a tailspin. They must always have control to not have to deal with their shadow self.
Another great Boston band!
I love this song
Aimee used to work in the comic book store next to The Cars studio in Boston, Everyone had a crush on her.. 🎶
You pretty much nailed it as far as comments of the song. They were one of the many one hit wonders of the 80’s
Aimee Mann who is considered by most music critics to be one of the finest lyricists of the 20th/21st century, has lived quite a life. As a child in Virginia, she was kidnapped by her mother. For several years her father and the authorities searched for them. Finally rescuing Aimee at about the age of 9. As a result of the trauma Aimee suffered, she did not speak for two years. Her homelife with her father steep brothers and stepmother was not good. Mocked by her stepbrothers, stepmother and father for her awkwardness at the time and her belief she could grow up to be a successful musician, Aimee found solace in writing her own songs. At 18 she moved to Botson, Ma attending The Berkley College of Music. She always had her own look. She worked days at Tower Records while attending college and putting together an experimental band called 'The Young Snakes.' Within months, bolstered by Manns vocals, lyrics and bass playing The Young Snakes released their first album 'Bark Along With…' Aimee left the band quickly after that as she felt the band was now simply being 'out there' for the sake of it and not because they were creating real art. She assembled Til Tuesday in 1983. They won Boston's Iconic Battle of the Bands series put on for years by Beantown rock station WBCN. Their first Album, Til Tuesday "voices Carry was released at the peak of MTVs reign. Mann was always a stunner and at 6feet sporting her own look-with that platinum nest of wild hair and rattail becoming instantly recognizable (and much copied) Til Tuesday grabbed visual and musical attention with this video. The dark realistic subject matter hadn't been portrayed in this way before. With a harrowing storyline to accompany the music and lyrics (all created by Mann). After the Album's release and success Til Tuesday ran into legal issues with their record company. To keep it short, they broke up after album three and Aimee was not allowed to play her own songs for several years (something John Fogerty experienced). So, she created her own music label and became one of the earliest independent artists, striking out in the early 1990's. Over the years she's released one critically acclaimed record after another. On her own terms, as a solo artist. She's won the three grammies she's been nominated for over the last few years. In 1999 her songs were used as an inspiration for the Oscar nominated movie 'Magnolia.' For which she also received a nomination. When not writing singing recording and touring she's done a bit of acting in things like 'The Big Labowski, Portlandia and 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer.' In the aughts Aimes tour bus overturned in a serious accident. Though she physically recovered some months later she experienced a complete psychotic break. She was admitted to a specialized hospital in Arizona where she spent time recovering and uncovering the reasons for the break (her childhood experiences). A few years ago, she was beset by a rare disorder in which music causes the listener to feel searing pain, loss of balance and clus6ter/migraine headaches. You can only imagine the impact this has on a musician. Through intense therapy and time spent drawing to express herself rather than using music Aimee has recovered. She us back on the road. Just over the summer, Til Tuesday came back together for the first time in 30 plus years to give a short live performance. With 'Voices Carry' their encore. Til Tuesday is a critically acclaimed band that should have been bigger. But Mann certainly has maintained incredible popularity and acclaim on her own. With her wistful, ironic lyrics, unique, beautiful vocals and haunting guitar and bass work. Oh, she decided to become a musician/lyricist/vocalist because she didn't feel inspired by any female singer in particular while growing up. Bob Dylan is one of her musical admirers and she's opened for him numerous times. Dylan likes the fact she doesn't fall over him like everyone else. She's married to musician/producer Michael Penn, brother of actor Sean Penn.
One of the best songs from the 80’s. Aimee Mann was very underrated.
