PERFECTION!
There's a two-part making-of on YouTube. The story behind the song and video is worth watching. https://youtu.be/wlTHJJX7QVU?si=2yL9Z-X2CscwKUed
You have to do their recent rendition of it, more quiet piano version. Made me tear up.
Yes hand drawn I think. But it should blow your mind that it was done then! Its a video made then ahead of its time.
The hallway scene at the end of the video is a nod to the psychedelic 1980 sci-fi movie "Altered States". The "South Park" episode "Tsst" also parodied the scene with Eric Cartman trippin' balls in the hallway.
No it was not a computer process. It was hand drawn tracing over live film images. 3000 frames were drawn for the cartoon scenes, which took 16 weeks alone. I remember when this came out in 1985 and people were blown away since we had never seen anything like it before. There is a making of video on YouTube. Watch it! Don't ask the viewers to tell you…research it yourself.
I was a small child when I first saw this video. I was so confused why the guy was sopping wet at the end. I was like… there is no rainstorm. This makes no sense! As an adult… a very hot Morten Harkett all sweaty, taking his jacket off…I get it now. ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I was far too young to appreciate the skill of the band, Morten Harkettโs vocal range, and the full scope of the music video. ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Everything is hand drawn by a married couple. Rotoscoping . Tracing and drawing over every single frame. 2000-3000 drawings over 4 months and a ยฃ100k budget.
Computers literally could not do this effect in the mid 80s. Probably why the video stands up so well is due to the filmmakers and hand drawn animation. Itโs as magical now as it was then. ๐โจ
Song Exploder recently interviewed the
writer of the song (the guy on guitar and drums in the video).
Thereโs even acoustic guitar in this song. I highly recommend that Song Exploder episode.
Itโs such a perfect romantic wooing pop song. ๐โจ
So perfect in fact the actress in the video and the lead singer became a couple for several years.
I LOVE your reaction. So enthusiastic but detailed.

It's called rotoscoping.
This was done by hand in pencil with frame by frame rotoscoping. You should watch the video "a-ha – the making of take on me." Part 2 is where they go over how the video was made. It is insane
