  1. I'm not sure an attack on the Hights would be foolish. It would if the artillery worked and if the Continentals didn't panic. So if the enemy does the optimal thing, yeah chasing without getting some rest is dumb. But you said the fort artillery was uselessly shooting over the British ranks anyways. In the dark of the night, I'm not sure the gunners would correct themselves. I don't blame Howe for not assuming the enemy does the thing least convenient for him since that's one of the worst assumptions in war you can make but I also think it goes to far and say "well in hindsight it was the right thing to do"

  2. I read about this battle in the book 1776. I love how it ends, because you CAN'T write this stuff. If you put a lucky getaway like that in a book, it would be panned as the most contrived deus ex machina imaginable.

  3. Washington was a great general, but he never seemed to account for the flanking manuver that the British would use again at the battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania later in the war. He still proved to be a great general, especially in knowing how to evacuate his officers and use them successfully.
