At CERN, scientists have explored ways to change one element into another, echoing the old dream of alchemy—turning lead into gold. While medieval alchemists pursued it through mystical experiments, modern researchers use particle physics and nuclear reactions to achieve something similar on a microscopic scale. By bombarding atoms with high-energy particles inside powerful accelerators, they can alter the nucleus of an atom, effectively transforming it into a different element.
Lead and gold are both heavy metals, but their nuclei contain different numbers of protons. Gold has 79 protons, while lead has 82. To convert one into the other, scientists must change the atomic structure, which requires immense energy. At CERN, this is theoretically possible through nuclear transmutation, where protons or neutrons are knocked out of lead nuclei under controlled conditions.
However, the process is incredibly costly and inefficient. The amount of gold produced is microscopic, far less than the energy and resources invested. In practice, the experiment demonstrates the power of modern physics rather than providing a viable way to manufacture gold. It shows how far humanity has come from alchemy’s dreams—using advanced science to do what was once thought impossible, if only in symbolic amounts.
