This video breaks down the complete rise and fall of Ola Electric and the leadership decisions of Bhavish Aggarwal. From becoming one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Influential People to facing a major collapse in the EV market, this case study explains what went wrong inside Ola.
Early Success of Ola Cabs
The story begins with Ola Cabs, launched in 2010, achieving massive success before global competitors like Uber and Rapido entered India. Bhavish built a strong brand, attracted top global investors, and established himself as one of India’s boldest entrepreneurs.
Birth of Ola Electric
In 2017, Ola Electric began as an EV ecosystem experiment in Nagpur, involving electric taxis, buses, and charging infrastructure. Later in 2019, the company shifted fully to electric scooters. With early investments from Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, SoftBank, and Ratan Tata, Ola Electric became a unicorn even before the scooters were launched.
Massive Ambition and Fast Execution
To speed up EV manufacturing, Bhavish acquired the Netherlands-based startup Etergo, gaining ready-made scooter designs and engineering teams. Ola set up a huge factory in Tamil Nadu and launched the S1 and S1 Pro with enormous hype, affordable pricing, and futuristic features.
Quality Issues and Service Failure
Despite massive pre-bookings and rapid sales, Ola scooters began facing thousands of complaints every month. Customer issues increased because Ola did not build a dealership network. With very few service centers, thousands of faulty scooters piled up, damaging customer trust. Factory production scaled, sales grew, valuation increased to 5 billion dollars, but real-world reliability fell apart.
Leadership Problems and Employee Exodus
Bhavish’s aggressive leadership style, unrealistic targets, and harsh treatment of employees resulted in extremely high attrition rates. Nearly 50% of the workforce left. Poor culture slowed execution and reduced product quality, eventually affecting market share.
Competition Takes Over
By 2024 and 2025, TVS, Bajaj, Hero, and Ather overtook Ola Electric in market share. Revenue fell, losses increased, and Ola dropped from No.1 to No.4 in EV scooters. Despite raising 5500 crores through IPO, the company struggled to retain growth.
Why Ola Electric Failed
The downfall comes down to three core reasons:
1. Excessive ambition without strong execution or quality focus
2. Too many distractions and too many failed side-startups
3. Toxic work culture and inability to retain top talent
Startup Lessons
• Do one thing and do it exceptionally well
• Focus until the product becomes stable and world-class
• Build a culture where talented employees can perform and stay
• Hype cannot replace high-quality execution
• Customers care about reliability, service, and experience more than marketing
