This was the quintessential magum opus of my generation. When we first heard this over the radio we sat in stunned silence as if we were in church. Not knowing what to make of it as far as classifying its genre, it was not danceable nor easily sung along too, with it's complex lyrics. All we knew for certain was we were listening to a musical greatness equal to Mozart. We spent the following days and months debating its true meaning, never being able to grasp its true profundity. It's obvious looking at ya'll reactions this song does not resonate with millennials, let alone current GenZers…
Graceland by Paul Simon is another great song. It's about Graceland, Memphis Tennessee. Home of Elvis, destination for many pilgrims.
I played this for my son when he turned 18 to let him know I am always there for him even though he is an adult
It's so brave of you to share this song, which is also my favorite song, since it touches you so deeply. Thank you so much for that.
And that is the power of music to help us touch the things that are hard to touch. Thank you both for sharing how this angelic song touched you. Life may never run out of pain, but there is always more beauty and more healing.
This song was released in 1970 at the height of the Vietnam War and America was tearing itself apart.
Ironically Simon and Garfunkel soon broke up after the release of BOTW due to artistic differences.
Reactor is a job most Gen X'ers cannot do.
To be a reactor is to be a crash test dummy impacted by 20th century culture.
And we've all already been smushed.
Remember the first time I heard this! CHILLS!!!!!
The third verse wasn’t in the original writing and why it doesn’t quite match the first two. The “silver girl“ relates to Paul Simon’s wife (Peggy Harper) at the time that had discovered her first grey hairs and was feeling down about growing old and his support that he will always be there for her.
Ironically “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” was also about her. 😂
