I recently shadowed a few surgical procedures. Those towels are placed in a patient's body to soak up blood and as a result they look exactly like the surrounding tissue. People obviously make mistakes, it doesn't always mean they're careless. Now those little towels usually have radiopaque strips that can be seen on an x-ray, in case there is a missing count for how many towels have been put it.
