Rick Shearman, an experienced swimmer from Byron Bay, found himself being swept over a mile out to sea by a powerful current while bodysurfing. After 20 minutes of fighting waves and realizing he couldn’t make it back to shore, he activated the Apple Watch’s Emergency SOS with the side button, placing a call for help from the water. Rescuers tracked his position and a helicopter plucked him to safety. Inspired by his story, Apple produced a video ad titled “Rick’s Rescue” to showcase how the Apple Watch can save lives.
