The robed harbinger of human demise was once seen much differently, as was death itself. The history of how we personify death is a record of what we face in life.

  1. I recommend Piers Anthony's fantasy novel "On a Pale Horse". In heartfelt scene, a dying man asked death if he could hear a particular hymn before he goes. With compassion, Death goes to the nextdoor church church, where the minister can see him, where he asks for use of his choir. Once the song is finished, the man dies happy.
