You know the phrase "a million is statistic"? I wonder if that mindset is how a lot of this dictators live with themselves. Obviously there's sociopathy and I'm pretty sure at least Leopold II could fall under that (his motive for genocide was almost entirely profit) but ASPD fortunately isn't a common personality disorder. Which kind of makes it worse in a way when people who can feel empathy and have people they care about can still rationalize killing millions, but I feel there's some emotional disconnect that allows them to be at peace with themselves committing crimes against humanity. The sheer amount of citizens they're killing is so big it lets him leave their conscience at door for their venal ambitions. Like Hitler tried to wipe out all the Jews in Europe at minimum, however he notably spared his mother's doctor because he was significant. With people in power in general, I get the impression that power can negatively impact one's morality. Of course these people already had a bunch of personal flaws, so with their degree of power it made that impact greater than normal

You paint Vlad as evil but he was one of the greatest protectors of Christianity. He did what he did for shock value and intimidation and as you said it worked they turned away and abandoned there goals of raising his cities to the ground. So I guess it’s all about perspective.
