You cannot judge an ancient empire with modern standards. Brutality was everywhere in the ancient times.
One cannot build an empire without being savage and sometimes brutal.
Moreover,a you can't put the Macedonian Empire, or the Roman empire together with the Mongols.
Whats interesting is the brutal western empires tracked and recorded their atrocities, is that perhaps why they are so vilified is because they didnt raze and burn everything down to erase their brutality. If only other modern empires had done the same like the Ottomans then we might have more accurate figures for the sub saharan slave trade, the numbers that we have are staggering and widely unnoticed or unacknowledged but if they had been as adept at record keeping as slavery maybe we would have a world that doesnt create make believe for oil money.
