The Real Cost of Storage: How Your Clutter Is Stealing Your Money and Space

We’ve been fed a huge lie — that the stuff in our storage rooms or storage units is worth money. It’s not! The truth is, your “storage treasures” are probably costing you thousands of dollars and stealing valuable space in your home. I’m sharing my own story of how I turned a cluttered storage room into a home office, added $15,000 of value to my house, and never missed a single thing I let go of.

You’ll learn how to figure out what your storage is really costing you, the mindset traps that keep us holding on to stuff “just in case,” and my simple decluttering rules to help you decide what’s actually worth keeping. I also talk about why “preservation becomes paralysis” — and how freeing yourself from storage clutter can literally give you more time, money, and peace of mind.

  1. No storage unit and I can’t think of anyone I know with one either. But I wonder if it’s bc houses are bigger now. My husbands side of the family all have a pretty big room dedicated to storage in their house. Plus their garage… attics.. and some even have a shop as well with storage. So if it wasn’t for all that, I’m sure they’d be paying for a storage unit.

  2. My husband has a storage unit ($70/month), a shed full of stuff at my parent's house, things on his parent's property, a storage closet in our basement, a truck he rarely uses that holds a bunch of his things, junk piled in our yard, and the garage at our house is 90% his stuff. He doesn't see an issue with any of this. 🤦🏼‍♀️

  3. I have a storage unit, in 2021 when my dad passed I moved from my 3 bedroom home(I was single) but my house had an office with big desk and guest room, my mom and dad had downsized to a 2 bedroom condo so it was a D, but it was DEATH of a loved one. I started out paying 90 bucks a month in 2022 and over a short few years it has gone up to $175…my 2026 goal is to get rid of it and most of the stuff
