We’ve been fed a huge lie — that the stuff in our storage rooms or storage units is worth money. It’s not! The truth is, your “storage treasures” are probably costing you thousands of dollars and stealing valuable space in your home. I’m sharing my own story of how I turned a cluttered storage room into a home office, added $15,000 of value to my house, and never missed a single thing I let go of.
You’ll learn how to figure out what your storage is really costing you, the mindset traps that keep us holding on to stuff “just in case,” and my simple decluttering rules to help you decide what’s actually worth keeping. I also talk about why “preservation becomes paralysis” — and how freeing yourself from storage clutter can literally give you more time, money, and peace of mind.

I gotta ditch my basement storage room lol
When my husband and I lived in our first apartment you could rent a garage. We didn’t at first but then when we found out we were pregnant we started renting one because our spare room which we used for storage/ office/ spare bed was becoming the nursery. So we moved all of that stuff into the garage. Then we moved in with my in laws while we were looking to buy a home so we rented a storage unit for all our stuff but we haven’t had one since we bought our home !
It’s funny though because we’ve gotten rid of almost everything we kept in the garage at our old apartment so looking back we should’ve just got rid of it all at the time and saved $150 a month for 2 years
We have decluttered greatly this past year. We are still working on some areas of the house and do have a storage unit. We got it this Summer as part of the decluttering process, so this resonates deeply. The plan is to finish the house by Spring and then turn back to the storage unit. This will help keep me accountable.
Hey there, clutterbug and fam. I have been fighting my ADHD and (excess) for years.. i love a lot of what we discuss here. But, the thing that helped me THE MOST is honoring my (stuff) and stressing i am (down-sizing) rather than de-CLUTTERing. I have an issue with categorizing my items as (junk). It is good stuff that cost me money and effort to get and time and effort to keep. By eliminating the problematic language of (junk, clutter, tradh, etc), my resistance subsides as it is easier to think i am re-distributing wealth so it can serve someone else as i myself (downsize). I, for one, was done with junk a long time ago and the usual language was slowing me down… until i switched to (downsizing progress) in my progress trackers and to-do lists 😍 hope this helps someone else. ADHD is all about emotion, and reducing shock and resistance and antagonism is the secret in my view ☺️
The overconsumption… and the personal love-language… i am both a gifter and the virtual shopper for the family. This led to MY cabinets and room and time being responsible for way too much for my energy 💔 i am learning to curb the purchase untill it is needed NOW but that sometimes translates to costing more. Sometimes people don't mean it but they let you handle items and issues for too many people and that ends up feeling the same as someone with their own excess and clutter. I need to learn to simplify, ask for help, and reduce the gifting a teeny weeny bit ☺️😅💔
It is probably cheaper to buy new Christmas decorations every year than to pay to store them at a facility.
Cass, I wish I could share a picture of my apartment right now for you to see. I having been dragging boxes upon boxes out of my storage unit for a few weeks to go through and purge. I was always a person who believed people should live in their space…until I downsized to a 608 sq foot apartment. It's taking time, but I am working hard to get rid of that storage unit and expense. I have one closet in my apartment and it's small. I have no under the counter cabinets in the kitchen, no closets or cabinets in the bathroom. It is a challenge. I do have a small space outside my apartment i can put stuff in…it's not very big, but i am trying to make it work and live in my space. PS: I am a crafter 🫣
Storage unit here! Too MUCH stuff
We don't have a storage unit we are paying for. My fil in law does however, hes sold his home and is currently in a rest home, but wants to move into a unit or something so got his stuff stored cause Noone else has room.
We live in a small apartment and I had a lot of medical equipment and a few other large items that I couldn't throw away because we do use them from time to time. But we simply didn't have space for it in our apartment. So I found a storage unit for $11/mo. (Many large chain Storage units have online deals.) It has been life-changing. Being able to get that stuff out of the house and truly declutter has been so wonderful. I view it as paying an extra $11/mo for an extra 55 square feet added to our apartment, which I think is a great deal. But paying an exorbitant amount of money to store items that I really don't need and will never use is a hard pass.
But I do think there are a FEW circumstances where storage units make sense, IF you can get one at a reasonable price.
