The Real Cost of Storage: How Your Clutter Is Stealing Your Money and Space

We’ve been fed a huge lie — that the stuff in our storage rooms or storage units is worth money. It’s not! The truth is, your “storage treasures” are probably costing you thousands of dollars and stealing valuable space in your home. I’m sharing my own story of how I turned a cluttered storage room into a home office, added $15,000 of value to my house, and never missed a single thing I let go of.

You’ll learn how to figure out what your storage is really costing you, the mindset traps that keep us holding on to stuff “just in case,” and my simple decluttering rules to help you decide what’s actually worth keeping. I also talk about why “preservation becomes paralysis” — and how freeing yourself from storage clutter can literally give you more time, money, and peace of mind.

  1. We used to live in a 600 sq ft condo in 1993. We rented a small storage unit when we were selling the condo. We had a bike in the dining room, etc. We put the bike and some other stuff in there while we were showing the condo. We only rented it for 1 month.

    My father-in-law has always had two storage units. I think that he paid $150-200 for each unit for 30+ years. $300 x 12 x 30 years = $108,000 $400 x 12 x 35 years = $168,000
My FIL is 96 YO,. He is living in assisted living and bedbound and in diapers, but otherwise healthy. His monthly expenses = $9,185. His social security is $3,00 and some family members chip in to make up the rest.

One of my brother-in-laws paid for a storage unit to store useless papers for 15 years. He eventually defaulted and never got his papers back.

Another BIL and his wife own a property that they rent out. They have a large storage shed on this property filled with OLD 40 year old couches, etc.

  2. You could totally run a poll on the channel to see how people respond and you can get a bit of a % on each category (storage rented with house, no storage unit rented with no storage room/outhouse, home with storage room/outhouse but no rented unit, storage unit with small apartment only, or storage unit rented with on-property storage room/outhouse?), it’d be so interesting to see!

  3. We've had a storage unit that was supposed to help us get organized…one year later and this plan has obviously failed. However, a couple of weeks listening to Cas, and I am getting rid of carloads out of the house. I am "doing it shitty" and loving the results, which also means I'm using up project supplies, gaining more room. Look out, Storage Unit, this week is your last.

  4. Haha I’ve been popping up in the comments defending our storage space. Still keeping the same position. You can pry my apple press, canning supplies, camping supplies, holiday decorations, wood working tools, 3 month supply of food and medication for household, beverage making, off season clothing, mushroom growing, vinegar culturing, air conditioner, fans, heaters.
