Don't forget that he spent many years at the Ottoman royal court as a political prisoner alongside his younger brother who betrayed him to get the throne of Valachia. He was trained by the Ottoman army in several torture tactics. He was not a monster but a fervent believer in freedom of his country from the Ottoman grip.
He was a European Christian Hero.

As a Romanian, I can tell you that Vlad was and is not seen as an evil tyrant. Ruthless, definitely, but not evil. Some Romanians still mention his name as corruption was/is obvious. Many would prefer someone like him to come and cleanse the country of thieves and corrupt politicians.
