Recent research, particularly by economist Utsa Patnaik, estimates that Britain extracted around $45 trillion worth of wealth from India during its colonial rule. This figure isn’t just about looting gold or treasure—it includes taxes, resource extraction, manipulated trade, and profits siphoned through unequal economic policies.

India was forced to export raw materials at dirt-cheap prices while importing finished British goods at high cost, crushing local industries. Famines under British rule weren’t just natural disasters—they were policy-driven. Grain was exported even as millions starved. Indian taxpayers funded British wars and administration costs, and even the railways—often praised as a gift from the British—were built primarily to facilitate extraction, not development.

What Britain took from India wasn’t just wealth—it was time, autonomy, infrastructure, and cultural self-confidence. The effects of that looting are still felt today, as India continues to rebuild from the hollowing out of its economy, institutions, and self-sustaining systems. The empire didn’t just leave monuments—it left behind scars, deep and enduring.
