There is a reason every billionaire from Musk to Thiel to Google have all gone from Silicon Valley to get on the US government contract teat, because it’s far easier to get billions with 0 consequences for failure from government than have to create great products and Inc’s.
Idk if we’ve ever had a truly free market but especially not since 08 crash US is about as far from free market as capitalism can be.

Let's see: we could contract with Ukrainian firms to license their intellectual property, thus enabling them to build more drones to destroy Russian invaders/rapists/murderers. Or, we could try to make a rich Trump supporter even richer by preferring to contract his startup even though it has zero relevant real-world expertise and is years behind Ukrainian technology. I don't think it's that bad that they gave all 3 companies orders. They're not giving them free money, it's an order for a number of actually working munitions, so if they can't get them to work, they won't get any money. The purpose of this is building more of a working local defense industry so they're helping fund multiple companies at an earlier stage to try and accomplish that.
