From what I read of the lyrics, the guy is still not working. He didn’t work back at home where they met and he doesn’t work now that they’ve moved to the city. She was working in convenience store and now she’s working in a grocery store and that’s their only income so they’re living in a shelter. Yet she has hope that he is going to get his shit together and they’ll have the ideal which would be a house in the suburbs. Unfortunately, this is probably the same thing that her mother thought about her father, whose body is too ravaged from alcohol at a young age to – according to him – work. The tragedy of this song is not so much her past as to her trying to escape her past and ending up in the same situation that her mother was in with her father and that she was in with her father, having to sacrifice for a man who does nothing. That’s the tragedy.
This song give me a Bob Dylan Folk music feel. I could be wrong, but it touches me like 60s Folk.
Tracy won a Grammy for this song in 1989, she freaking blew up, we were all in awe and loved her. Still love her!!
Tracy's the pride of Cleveland, Ohio. I have decades of love for her.
Like come remade this song like 2 years ago in country and brought her on stage i think he son a cena for it which sucked cause she never got an award. She actually debuted this song at a concerto some big name was supposed to perform like journey or someone but the got sick so they out her on and she pulled this out of her hai! Soooo underrated!!!❤❤❤
I think you played it sped up
You reacted to Tracy Chapman Fast car 1 year ago, this is not an introduction, it's a rehash. I'm amazed that you don't remember as it's such an incredible song.
You should listen to behind the walls
You got it turned around; she has a job and her partner doesn't.
This album is amazing
