Karnataka’s vegetarian food culture is soulful, diverse and full of surprises. On this stop of 28 Weeks 28 States, I travelled to Udupi and Manipal to explore why this region is celebrated for its flavours. From a humble canteen near the Krishna Matt to a homely kitchen run by a warm elderly couple, every plate offered something memorable.
The variety here is extraordinary. Soft, airy snacks paired with tangy gravies, spiced rice dishes bursting with flavour, and unique versions of sambar and curries showed just how creative vegetarian food can be. Each bite reflected the depth of Karnataka’s culinary traditions while still surprising me with something new.
Ending the meal with payasam and the hospitality of the people made the experience unforgettable. This episode is a celebration of Karnataka’s veg food scene in its most authentic form.

Vegetarian food is simply peaceful. All non veg had given me too much disturbance 😅
Udupi is quite a familiar name and a genuine recall of yummy taste famous for food standards since 200 y. Or more. These traditional foods when prepared with cold pressed oils and home made fresh ground masalas these recipes create NO heartburn, congestion, gastritis or constipation !!! AND NO DISEASES

One small correction… It’s not called sambar. Locally it’s called as Thouthe Koddel (Thouthe is the name of the vegetable which is also called as Mangalore or Malabar Cucumber)
Udupi matha meal should have been tried, was it ekadashi?
