Tutankhamen, the young pharaoh of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty, was buried under extensive protection for several key reasons rooted in both religious beliefs and practical concerns:
1. Belief in the Afterlife: Ancient Egyptians believed that the pharaoh would live eternally in the afterlife. The tomb needed to safeguard his body and possessions to ensure his safe journey and continued power in the next world. Every protective layer—coffins, sarcophagi, and chambers—was meant to preserve his ka (spirit) and soul.
2. Valuable Treasures: Tutankhamen’s tomb was filled with gold, jewelry, and precious artifacts. These items were meant for his use in the afterlife, but they also made the tomb a target for thieves. Layers of protection, hidden passages, and sealed chambers were designed to deter looters.
3. Magical Protection: The tomb contained spells, curses, and inscriptions meant to protect Tutankhamen from harm. Magical rituals and amulets were intended to guard him against evil spirits, enemies, and even future intruders.
4. Political Reasons: Tutankhamen came to the throne after a period of religious and political turmoil. While he himself was a relatively minor king, the wealth and symbolism of his burial reflected the importance of restoring order and divine favor. The protection emphasized the sacredness of the pharaoh and discouraged desecration.
Interestingly, despite all these precautions, Tutankhamen’s tomb remained mostly hidden for over 3,000 years, only to be discovered almost intact by Howard Carter in 1922. This level of preservation was rare, which is why his burial gives us such a remarkable window into ancient Egyptian funerary practices.
