@dovetonsturdee7033 The Polish-British mutual assistance treaty was NOT a pledge to start a war. The day Churchill became PM made the phoney war real
war, which Hitler didn't want, so halted his armies at Dunkirk as a peace gesture. If the warmongering buffoon Churchill 'won' his f*cking war, the only beneficiary could be Stalin.
This is an excellent exploration of the work of the Bletchley Park codebreakers, but I think there really should have been an acknowledgement of the horrific mistreatment Alan Turing received when he was outed as gay after the war. It's an aspect of his story that deserves to be remembered: he was one of the great heroes of the war, whose work saved untold thousands of lives, but instead of the praise and honor he deserved, he was chemically castrated by the state, leading to his suicide.

@dovetonsturdee7033 "to lend the Polish Government all support in their power." doesn't pledge war; Germany wasn't attacked. What I don't know is who sought war, given acres of stuff about Churchill and the May 1940 peace-war cabinet divide.
Churchill, First Lord Of The Admiralty since September 1939, had ordered mine-laying and boarding Altmark in NEUTRAL Norwegian waters.
Google "Dunkirk blunder".
Post-WW1, only Poland's miraculous destruction of the Red Army prevented it from overrunning Europe in the 1920's.
You didn't know Churchill boasts about war in his memoirs? you do now.

There would have been fewer sinkings of merchant ships if the encryption method used by the british had been changed to something more secure.
As it was, the Germans were decrypting the messages as fast as the intended recipients.
Thus, U-boat captains could be told when a ship would leave port and when it was expected to arrive.
