  1. We all laugh at the 'it's all fields' joke, but actually… that realization plus some other stuff that has to do with higher level math… it broke the mind of a really intelligent person in a town I grew up in.

Now he's mostly a nameless nobody that most people would never know the name of anyways.

It's like Chris said, light, electricity and magnetism are inexorably linked. We can laugh at this joke because we just accept it and understand the basic levels of it. He was digging into the deeper end of that pool. And he drowned in it.

He looked into the abyss of higher level maths; and it spat him back out a changed man.

If he's still around, he's probably drunker than a skunk right now. That's his coping mechanism he fell into afterwards. As my stepdad said about it all… "So much potential, gone, because he lost his marbles trying to crack math."

I bring this up at all, because of the fields comment, because according to my stepfather, it was one of the things he kept repeating to himself in his more lucid moments when it all went down and was sent to the insane asylum still operating back then. (Ours were shut down years later due to abuse going on.)

Not saying this to ruin the joke on anyone here, because there is some humor to it. But at the same time, I want ya'll to understand that sometimes these things we think are funny, are actually mathematcially really serious (apparently). Serious enough to send a mathematician to the looney bin.
