Ecuador is the last one to "join" La Gran Colombia because Guayaquil liberated itself and was known as the free provinces, that's why San Martin and Bolivar decided to meet here as this where free neutral grounds, and Guayaquil Opened its doors to receive both armies, once welcomed inside Bolivar threatens Guayaquil's government into joining him and trying to avoid bloodshed Guayaquil joins Bolivar.
Later Guayaquil and Bolivar started the campaign into the Andes which would lead into the liberation of the present Ecuador
humble origins? bolivar? the guy was the son of one of the richest spanish families in Caracas, they had 3 houses in the city, two of which were for leisure
Thank you for this interesting video.
Dude is brushing over so much crazy stuff: Bolivar's giant inheritance, tons of legendary battles, dudes with guns losing to indians on horses with sharp sticks, a random british regiment that was hired to help out. So much gold, highly recommend further reading
Day 94 of asking for a perfect Finland video
San Martín and Bolívar were great generals, but stupid politicians. They expelled the Spanish in a war that destroyed much of the infrastructure and was financed by the British. In the end, small countries with blurred borders emerged, causing wars between countries and civil wars, revolts, instability, and centuries-old debts to the British. Worst of all was the weakness of the new countries after “freeing” themselves from the Spanish. In less than 40 years, the Mexicans lost half their territory to the Americans, Colombia lost its influence in the Caribbean and, a few years later, lost Panama, Argentina lost the Falkland Islands, Spain was forced to sell Florida, and shortly afterwards lost Cuba and the Philippines. And in the new countries, dubious movements emerged that committed several genocides against the indigenous peoples in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Central America, etc.
18:38 You wanna know the sad part about this? When Hugo Chavez took power in Venezuela in 1999, he named his political movement the "Bolivarian Revolution" and took over Venezuela's national symbols so that they would be associated with him and his party. This included the image of Simon Bolivar.
As the years passed, Chavez basically implemented all of the aspects you mentioned that Bolivar wanted to implement. Chavez changed the constitution to allow indefinite reelections and filled the electoral power with loyalists to be president for life. He didn't have the legal power to appoint his successor, but he still selected his successor in his dying days, and Nicolas Maduro's whole campaign was exactly that, to sell the idea that he was Chavez' appointed successor and heir, going as far as calling himself Chavez' son. Chavez and Maduro both had a war against the parliament when they didn't control it, Maduro going as far as creating his own parliament when he lost majority on the real one. They both got "exceptional" powers to sign laws directly. Chavez not only made sure to control the military, but he also created an oligarchic military caste. And just like the military and the electoral power, Chavez also made sure the legislative and judiciary powers served him.
All in all, yes, what Bolivar was proposing would have resulted in horrible instability and an oppressive, corrupt, and dictatorial military regime. I know this because I am a Venezuelan who has seen the results of just practicing and what that has done to my country for the past 25 years.
I'm wondering why Brazil didn't make more moves west during that time. Even if you said it was just because of the Andes that still leaves the North colonies like Venezuala.
I have an really cool what if "what if evrything went good for Mihai Viteazu the first man to manage for an short amount of time to unit the principalities of romania"
