What is Birthright Israel?

If you’re wandering through the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, you’re guaranteed to run into at least one or two groups of young Jewish tourists from across the world all experiencing Israel for the first time.

Though Israel is rich in tourism, what sets this ten-day trip to Israel apart is that it’s all completely free. Seems too good to be true? Think again.

Thanks to a group of philanthropists, Birthright Israel has provided free trips to over 750,000 participants from 68 countries. The trip aims to help reconnect eligible participants with their Jewish heritage and inspire a return to Jewish pride and continuity.

About Explainers: From ancient Jewish traditions to the modern State of Israel, we explain it all. Diving into anything and everything related to Jewish culture, history, and even religion.
Understand Jewish holidays, Israeli politics, Jewish diasporic communities, and more. Learn about Judaism in pop culture, debunking myths about Jews, and explore obscure Israeli landmarks. We’re asking questions as basic as “What is the Talmud?”, and as obscure as “How did hip-hop boost Kosher wine sales?”, and everything in between.

About Unpacked: We provide nuanced insights by unpacking all things Jewish. People are complex and complicated — yet we’re constantly being pushed to oversimplify our world. At Unpacked we know that being complex makes us more interesting. Because of this, we break the world down with nuance and insight to drive your curiosity and challenge your thinking.

  1. Hmm…but ONLY for YOUNG Jews (in other words, Jews of breeding age). OLD Jews (like me, born in 1965 and already aged out of eligibility by the time the program began in 1999) are NOT welcome in Israel. That's OK. I'm used to not being welcome anywhere, really. I do life on my own, no spouse, no kids, no community, no nothing. Just me…and my foster cats, when I have them. Not a family man at all. That makes me a BAD Jew. OK. No problem, I accept that.

  2. Israel does not belong to the Palestinians, or the Israelis. It belongs to the lost sheep of the True Tribes, 12 of which who were lost in Jeremiah. The Jews are keeping it warm for the lost sheep. As revelations implies “the beast with 10 horns will give its power to the first beast, as God ordered them”

  3. Imagine your home being ripped from you, your people bullied and treated like animals. Only for the place you once called home to be a tourist attraction for people that share the same beliefs as your oppressors, and them labeling it as their "birthright".

  4. Isn’t rather weird and entitled to call it a birthright trip but it’s a Jewish convert? And Palestinians have no right of return and it’s a pain in the ass for them to even visit in some cases?
For example my heritage is Western Europe. If I converted to Judaism I would be entitled to a birthright/right of return even though my ethnicity is still Western Europe. But a Palestinian who was born there is not entitled to return home without jumping through a ton of hoops. How on earth do Jewish people not realize or understand how incredibly entitled this is? And how awkward it is to say you’re from there when you’re also of European descent (in most cases)
