Where Does Your Tattoo Ink Go? The Science Behind Laser Removal

Laser tattoo removal works by targeting pigment particles with extremely short bursts of high-intensity light. These pulses produce heat and mechanical stress that cause the pigment to fracture into smaller pieces. Different wavelengths are used to break down different colors, because pigments absorb light differently depending on their composition. Once fragmented, the ink particles become small enough for macrophages (specialized immune cells) to engulf and transport them through the lymphatic system. From there, the fragments are gradually excreted through natural processes like sweating, urination, and defecation.
