Who really fired the first shot at Lexington? 🔫⚖️ Was it the British Army, marching to seize colonial supplies? Or the Lexington militia, standing their ground? Both sides swore the other pulled the trigger first. Witnesses contradict, propaganda muddied the water, and even decades later, memories of the event shift with pride and politics.

  1. I’m entirely inclined to believe it was a misfire. Who’s to say the Militiamen were all keeping proper trigger discipline given their groggy and panicked state?
And it has precedent. Take something like the Milperra Massacre, where the first shot was fired on accident.

  2. I have always believed in an idea that an extremely disgruntled person fired the first shot from a hidden place on the perimeter of the green. Causing each side to fire at will, not knowing who truly fired the first shot. Everyone's testimony changes in the 1800s are from them wanting the glory and pride. But I don't think either "Side" fired the first shot, but a vigilante in favor of independence fired first. Or the opposite, that a British Sharpshooter was ordered secretly to take a position to fire the shot to begin the war, so that the rebellion could be put down before it had a true chance of starting, but the plan failed terribly for the British.
