As you think about whether you want to work on or at a startup, I want you to ask what great investors ask themselves all the time: WHY NOW?

I’m Garry Tan, venture capitalist and founder at Initialized Capital. We were earliest investors in billion dollar startups like Coinbase and Instacart, and I’m a Forbes Midas List Top 100 venture capitalist in the world. We want these videos to be about helping people build world-class teams and startups that touch a billion people. Our startups have gone on to create more than $200 billion in market value so far, and Initialized has over $3.2B in assets under management.

Great video. I'm working on Homelessness in California. Appreciate these videos!
Garry, you did great 👍
Lol I still have my Motorola Marco. General Magic was a helluva drug even when the web was just getting started.
This channel is a wealth of insights. Thank you!
This question doesn't always apply to million dollar ideas. What about startups which take years and years to build and take off? Where their initial markets were small. Nvidia and GPUs for instance. Apple and the personal computer as another. We can even apply this to old industries like drug development. Drugs which takes a decade to develop from target discovery, perhaps nothings changed in that decade, but once they've passed all the trials, they can make huge waves in the market.
Thanks
So glad that I found this youtube channel, some time ago alongside with YC. It's one of my couple top channels that I watch. Huge thanks for putting your soul and energy in each of those videos. ♥
I'm not sure but I think this video just gave me an idea😮
Well I'll be damned… I've always been interested at the intersections of my greater interests and have been commended by college professors for finding contact points that were seemingly unrelated. TBH, I've been holding myself back. Having found your channel just an hour ago, it really dawned on me that I've lost time—but gained experience which provides me with the leverage to bring things full circle. Climate Change is extremely important; however, I'd argue that the biggest wave now is AI (which can aid in combating CC as well). If there was ANYTHING that epitomized your three major Why Nows, it's that. After decluttering my mind by finally drafting a flowchart of my interests/passions, career trajectory, and education, I've landed on the four pillars of actionable insights for myself including: Regulatory Compliance, AI/Data Science (or Analytics), Writing (main platform being a newsletter (as I am a writer)), and further creative output via Branding & Digital Presence (especially Content Creation). Thank you Garry for putting out such amazing short-form, inspiring, informative videos that not only promote critical thinking, but help others like myself come to the realization that we've had it right all along. Are there any initiatives, or investments, of yours that fall within these pillars? It'd be an honor to chat.
The government example isn't applicable any more. The point stands, the example doesn't. Maybe we need a new video now.
