How did American style Mexican tacos transform into taco rice, and become a staple in the remote island of Okinawa, Japan? That’s the question we’re off to answer today, and we’re heading to the original and most famous King Tacos in Okinawa, Japan!
The taco rice was actually quite tasty, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Spending lots of time eating in Hawaii as a kid, tacos rice is actually something I would have eaten as a kid growing up and fit perfectly with my upbringing.
Definitely when you’re in Okinawa, Japan, you have to try taco rice!

I’m Mexican, I was in Okinawa long ago, just visiting. At first I thought “tako-rice” was a an octopus with rice dish. My first impression was it had all the ingredients of a burrito, meat, rice , cheese and the veggies. I told my girlfriend back then, this looks Mexican, it doesn’t taste, but definitely looks. I honestly wouldn’t eat it again, back then they added ketchup! Ketchup and omurice I can take, but an imitation of Mexican plus ketchup makes my mind play tricks on me. My respects to the staple Okinawa food though.
Ah yesss. Memories of stumbling around gate 2 street, at midnight. Starving, and finding a bomb taco rice spot.
I was stationed on Okinawa in 92-93 and I miss Taco Rice. I found a little place in Quantico VA that had it It was good but not the same.
I've been watching your videos for over 7 years and really enjoy your content, but this is the first time I've been truly disappointed.
In this specific video, I saw you eating food on top of someone's AC outdoor unit, using it as a table.
I must let you know that many Japanese residents are currently very concerned about tourists who disregard local rules and manners. Using private property, such as an AC unit, in this manner is seen as highly disrespectful.
Please respect the locals and the culture here in Japan as well as in all over the world. Look forward to your next videos.
That is not main/original location, been better to go there to tell the story. Unfortunately where it was truly invented at Parlor Senri, is closed. But main Kings Tacos branch is in Kin Town outside of Camp Hansen. Also you missed out on getting the best Okinawan style tacos, the original at Charlies Tacos, started in the 1950s.
Disrespectful to tacos
Damn taco rice for a little over $3? Now that's a deal.
Wish I was back on the rock!! I was there in 82-83 at Hansen. Shrimp Yakisoba and Taco Rice was a main stay for us! SEMPER FI!!
The crunchy tacos weren't created by Americans.. They Crunchy Tacos have existed in Mexico 🇲🇽 since ages if I'm not mistaken 😤. Example: Tacos Dorados, Flautas Etc Etc 😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤
Was easily my favorite spot in Kin-town back in the 90s. I love that they still use the exact same thin plastic containers for the taco rice. I'd always use extra salsa. Late nights at the karaoke bars and drinking on Friday, then some delicious taco rice to top off the evening!
