How did American style Mexican tacos transform into taco rice, and become a staple in the remote island of Okinawa, Japan? That’s the question we’re off to answer today, and we’re heading to the original and most famous King Tacos in Okinawa, Japan!

The taco rice was actually quite tasty, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Spending lots of time eating in Hawaii as a kid, tacos rice is actually something I would have eaten as a kid growing up and fit perfectly with my upbringing.

Definitely when you’re in Okinawa, Japan, you have to try taco rice!

  1. Mark! I was at Camp Kinser in late 80s. Its the first Marine base heading north out of Naha. Taco rice was a dish back then and very good! twice the amount you showed for about 2 bucks. The best stuff was Yakisoba and Yakitori and it wasnt from a restaurant! Mama Sans would cook out of their house back then and you would knock on the window and she would open and take your order and make it fresh. Huge plate of yakisoba and 4-6 skewers of grilled meat was 3 bucks! It was amazing food! I lived in barracks 1224 on camp Kinser and it was right on the beach. Google Maps shows a new highway and Parco shopping mall. None of that was there back then and you could walk out your back door and jump right into the Sea!! The good old days!! Thanks for your nostalgic post! Many a memory.
