If you’ve heard of the Kardashev Scale, you might be a fan of Sci-Fi. Or maybe you’re just interested in when Earth will achieve that elusive Type 1 status. But since its inception, people who aren’t Kardashev have had the opportunity to iterate on his original idea…from thinking about where blue whales fall on the Scale, to thinking up entirely *new* scales to describe humanity’s relationship with the world around them.

  1. Why does everyone assume that if there is a Type II or Type III civilization out there, and if they met humans, that they would destroy us or prevent us from existing?

I think the biggest block in our search for life in the universe is that we project our own human tendencies onto possible life elsewhere. Maybe a Type III civilization is one that has no desire or need for violence and destruction. Maybe the reason you wouldn't find them is because they know humans are destructive, so they have filtered themselves out of our reach permanently.

Alien life is not human life. We are projecting our own violent and destructive nature onto other possible civilizations. I think the worst thing (or most humbling thing) for humanity would be to be visited by a Type III civilization, see a peaceful and unified utopia, and that civilization simply determines humans are nothing more than violent apes and leaves as if we are not worth their time and efforts. To have cosmic excellence tell humans, you will never be like us.

  2. Is it just or … can it be the combination of AI and Power Demands ties into the reaching of Type 1? I mean if we are at 0.73, and we keep building more and more power for AI systems. Could it be AI is achieved when you reach a level of say 0.8? 0.9? 1? Another way to look at this would be can any civilization ever advance to Type 1 or beyond without first creating Sentient AI???
