Even though he didn't show the results. It actually works. I've done this a few times when I installed my kitchen butcher block and I was able to make the gap a little tighter but enough room for expansion. Using a shim was better than using a thicker stock like 1/2 or 3/4 cause your cutting waste is minimal.
